Beyond the Roundhouse takes you inside the organizations and programs making a difference for New Mexicans, and shows how state policy and investment connect to their work.
New Mexico Legal Aid
NMLA covers housing law concerning evictions, interpersonal violence and family law, consumer law related to debt collection, payday loans, and consumer fraud, as well as economic security; this includes assisting our neighbors when it comes to public benefit programs. During this visit, we spoke about what NMLA needs to continue to uplift our neighbors and develop solutions to address these issues; specifically, through the lense of the “Ripple Effect” as a sound economic investment.
Albuquerque Sign Language Academy & NM Developmental Disability Workforce Training Center
The bilingual (English and American Sign Language) instruction prepares deaf and hard of hearing students for the wider world while providing hearing students — many of whom have deaf family members — with the opportunity to fully express themselves in sign language. 70% of students at ASL Academy receive special education support, with 30% of students having complex or compound special needs.
Meeting New Mexicans of every profession has been one of my biggest sources of inspiration in this job. If you and your team are doing something special and would like me to visit your institution, please send an email to my legislative aide at Julian.Barnard@nmlegis.gov.
