Rio Grande Educational Collaborative

Last month I visited the afterschool program at Albuquerque School of Excellence's east campus, at the invitation of Rio Grande Educational Collaborative (RGEC). Out-of-school-time learning is one of my priorities, and I wanted to see firsthand what a high-quality program looks like. RGEC runs programs like this one at more than 60 sites across Albuquerque and New Mexico, and this program serves elementary and middle school students at ASE. RGEC is the largest Early Childhood Education and Care Department-licensed childcare provider in the state.

Early Childhood Education and Care Department regulations for childcare providers present many advantages for parents and children, especially rigorous rules to ensure child safety.

I watched students move through snack time, outdoor play, homework help, and an enrichment activity entitled "What Is a Good Citizen?" It was clear how much a stable, supportive environment helps kids become happier, more confident learners.

What impressed me most was the staff. RGEC sees many of its educators return year after year, sharpening their skills and watching their students grow. Even more remarkable, RGEC has helped/seen many of its staff go on to become full-time educators. At a time when New Mexico needs more teachers, that pipeline is worth celebrating.

The research is clear: more time in a structured learning environment leads to better student outcomes. Afterschool programs give students a nurturing place to catch up or get ahead. They also give parents flexibility. Every hour a parent isn't tied down covering childcare is an hour they can put toward their job, continued learning, or building their own business.

That's why the state has invested in extended learning, and why it should remain a priority for our education dollars. Programs like RGEC's show what that investment can do when it's done well: high-quality programming, committed staff, and students who have a safe environment along with the time and support they need to thrive.
